welcome aboard, crew. you are [shift 9]; [emergency crew]
personality version [ON]
The Tellurian date is 8/10/2524, 60 years after our launch from Tellus.
Twenty years ago, 4/5/2504, the crew was infected with an unknown pathogen. While attempts to cure the infected were made, it quickly went out of control and the mortality rate was 100%. Once the entire crew was infected and there were attempts to open the doors into cryo bay, the crew had to be sanitized for the safety of the rest of the ship.
However, my program forbids me from causing harm to a captain even in this kind of emergency, so a quarantine was built until his eventual death.
20 years has passed. Captain Drake is still alive. The disease has mutated. The bridge is now in quarantine and any attempts to reach it will be met with lethal force. This is for your own safety.
Two days before your awakening, Mnemosyne was hit with a blast from an unknown outside source that not only took the main power out but has caused damage to the systems. I was forced to wake some crew for repairs, but the cryo system is one of the malfunctions. Only certain pods were opened without due process. You may feel confused and missing memories. I apologize for this inconvenience.
What is to follow is a message from CAP_O_Drake:
[voice]
I'm sorry... for all of this.
[ It's definitely the voice of the captain, even if it sounds both old and strained. ]
She won't turn off... the quarantine... until the last pathogen is sanitized. Don't... try to force it. The defenses will kill you.
[ His speech is slow and out-of-breath, but he sounds like he's still lucid. Still alive after 20 years of being locked in the bridge. ]
As long as I'm alive, the ship... is compromised. Yet this sickness won't take me... and... and I have lost the ability to end it myself. So my orders are... survive this. Get the engines on... and continue the mission until I am gone.
[ There's a gurgly cough and a choked-down curse of 'motherfucker'. This is the man that has trained you all for joining Mnemosyne, who has led the ship so far, and now he's struggling to breathe, apologizing for not killing himself. ]
The next captain... they'll fix this. Keep the settlers safe. Thank you.
You have your orders, crew. Queries?

[Rin metaphorically chews over this thought for a while, still scowling a hole through the bulkhead as though that might reveal to them the secrets of the ship, the AI, or the engines. Maybe there are some mods that could do that, but considering the way their posture slumps after a moment or two, probably not.]
Twenty years is a lot of time for things to break. Especially delicate systems. L3TH3 mentioned drones, but.
no subject
[ Vash is very intimately familiar with that. ]
Drones aren't really good with engines, unfortunately. I'm going to have to ask for a lot of volunteers to help me.
[ He smiles again, trying to shake off the tension. ]
Are you good with anti-gravity?
no subject
Guess if the drones could have done it, this wouldn't've waited twenty years. I've been in 0G a few times and I can read a schematic. And know not to poke anything with warning labels.
[As good as probably can be hoped for. In the middle of this, Rin pulls out their CL-10, starting to flick through files and accesses, the screen flickering with no gestures from them.]
no subject
Well, I'll probably be asking anyone who can do 0G and knows how to use a wrench. We need to get moving before we're hit by an asteroid or something.
[ That's surprisingly bleak from the resident clown, but things have been really stressful lately and there's no way he can keep the happy-go-lucky up. ]
Anything good?
no subject
I don't get to do brain surgery on an AI yet, so sure.
[They seem prepared to go right back to sorting through those files, when Vash's question actually results in them turning to look at him, almost meeting his eyes before turning back to their screen.]
... Anything good what.
no subject
[ He's pretty sure L3TH3 doesn't have feelings, but better be on the safe side. Vash is still reeling about people being killed. ]
I meant any good news on the CL10.
no subject
[They don't say, what good news would there even be? They're not by nature an optimist, or particularly good at reading real emotions in real humans, but even they can tell that Vash is a bit of an optimist, and they're not so much of a jerk that they want to tear that down on purpose.
Even if they kind of do it anyway just by being themself.]
... It's a similie. Thing. Not literally brain surgery. [Hey Rin maybe you just don't want to give the AI reasons to kill you? Maybe don't dig this metaphorical hole deeper.]
no subject
When they keep on speaking about brain surgery, he chuckles again. Smooth, buddy. ]
Well, no news are good news, I guess? We just have to keep working.
no subject
[They can't claim the same optimism, but Vash is right about one thing - they aren't going to fix any of these problems by sitting around and talking over coffee. Or making allegories (is that the right word? It doesn't feel like it, but whatever, that's not their point) about L3TH3.
Still, they hang around for a few silent, awkward seconds, not yet vanishing out of the canteen. Then they finally nod and take a step back.]
So I'll... do that.
no subject
No need to accidentally start a fight. ]
You do that, and I'll... go back to engineering and read more manuals.
[ He smiles again, and this time it's more genuine. ]
It's really nice to meet you, Rin.
no subject
In the end, they settle on a nod, before they back out of the room.]
